As part of Pint of Science, an organisation that promotes scientific outreach in a friendly setting, Hervé Frezza-Buet and Nicolas Marsal, research professors at CentraleSupélec, will deliver  fascinating talks to help us understand how research keeps pushing away the boundaries of knowledge. A journey into the heart of innovation, where science is brilliant.

Theme 1: Can we build a conscious machine?   Hervé Fressa-Buet (Professor – CentraleSupélec / Loria)

This question will be approached from a philosophical point of view, using simple computer stimulations which results may prove surprising! This will lead us to reflect about a broader question:  does living matter, and most specifically the brain, function as a computational system? To answer this, the concept of self-organisation will be explored, along with its link to certain models of the brain.

Theme 2: Manipulating light: science or magic?   Nicolas Marsal (Professor – CentraleSupélec / LMOPS), and Théo Creola-Chivers (PhD)

Light is not just what illuminates our homes. Light can be shaped, bended, we can make it spin like a tornado! These “structured” light beams create pave the way for new technologies: ultra-fast communications, advanced imaging, optical computing… Come and discover how physicists are manipulating light to invent the future.
